Bereavement leave

In the event of the death of a mother, father, stepfather, stepmother, foster mother, foster father, sister, brother, spouse, child, mother-in-law, father-in-law, sister-in-law, brother-in-law or grandparent, you are granted up to 10 consecutive days of leave. The first three days of leave is with pay and the last seven days is without pay.

If the funeral takes place more than 320 km from Ottawa, you are granted an extra day of paid leave to attend the funeral, or if the funeral takes place more than 640 km from Ottawa, you are granted two extra days of paid leave to attend the funeral.

Bereavement leave will not be granted if the death or funeral occurs during a period when you are not required to work. In exceptional circumstances, additional leave may be approved and cases of bereavement other than those listed above may be granted at the University’s discretion.
