Crime-related child death or disappearance leave

Crime-related child death or child disappearance leave is an unpaid job-protected leave of absence providing up to 104 weeks with respect to the crime-related death or disappearance of a child.

Employees who have been employed by the University for at least six consecutive months are entitled to crime-related child death or disappearance leave if it is probable, considering the circumstances, that a child of the employee died or disappeared as a result of a crime.

An employee is not entitled to this leave if the employee is charged with the crime or if it is probable, considering the circumstances, that the child was a party to the crime.

Period of allocated leave

  • For the crime-related disappearance of a child, the leave must be taken within the 105-week period that begins in the week the child disappeared.
  • For the crime-related death of a child, the leave must be taken within the 105-week period that begins in the week the child died.

In most cases, an employee must take the leave in a single period.

Inform the University

An employee must inform Human Resources in writing that he or she will be taking such a leave and provide the dates of absence.

If an employee has to begin taking the leave before notifying the University, he or she must inform Human Resources as soon as possible, providing the expected dates of absence.
