Retirement not mandatory

  • This Act was submitted in June of 2005. Adopted on December 8, 2005 it received Royal Assent December 12. Following a 12 month transition period, it came into force December 12, 2006.

  • Mandatory retirement ended on December 12, 2006.

  • The abolition of mandatory retirement does not affect retirement benefits already acquired.

  • Employees can continue contributing to a retirement plan and to qualify for retirement benefits after 65 years of age, in accordance with the number of years of service or up to the pension benefit ceiling.

  • You can maintain your contributions to the plan until the 30th of November of the year during which you reach 71 years of age. Note that your pension benefits will be mandatorily paid to you as of December of the year you reach 71.
