President’s Awards for Service Excellence

Each year, the president recognizes employees who have consistently demonstrated creativity and shown initiative in meeting client needs and improving the university experience.

Through these awards -– the individual and the team awards -– the University recognizes tangibly the importance of service excellence and, more specifically, the enhancement of the university experience.

The nomination deadline for both awards is March 31, 2017.

Individual award

This award consists of four $1,000 prizes (taxable). All support staff are eligible, regardless of their job level. Two prizes are awarded to staff members in faculties and two are awarded to staff members in services.

Objectives

  • To highlight the key role staff members play in enriching the quality of the university experience.
  • To recognize staff members who:
    • Look for ways to defy the conventional, improve service quality and provide solutions that meet clients’ needs
    • Give expression to the University’s vision of service excellence
    • Stand out because of the exceptional quality of the service they provide

Prizes

Four cash prizes of $1,000 each (taxable) and a commemorative plaque for each recipient

Eligibility

All members of the support staff are eligible for the award, regardless of job status or category (contract or permanent).

Nominations

  • Nominations must have the nominee’s consent.
  • Nominations can come from groups or from individuals, including managers, colleagues, professors, students, students’ parents or members of the general public.
  • Employees cannot nominate themselves.

Nominations must include

  • A description of the nominee’s exceptional contribution to service excellence that helps enhance the university experience (maximum of 350 words). If the description exceeds 350 words, only the first 350 words will be considered when evaluating nominees. The description must objectively portray the nominee’s accomplishments during the year or achievements that illustrate ongoing service excellence over multiple years.
  • Three letters or statements of support describing the nominee’s exceptional contribution to service excellence that enhances the university experience (maximum of 150 words each).
  • Contact information for the nominators, those providing letters of support and the nominee.

Evaluation criteria

The candidate stands out among their peers and makes an exceptional contribution to fulfilling the University’s vision of service excellence by:

  • Finding solutions, 20%
  • Reflecting a positive attitude, 20%
  • Exercising skill and professionalism, 20%
  • Valuing the members of the University community, 20%
  • Acting with compassion and care, 20%

Team award

Two team awards are presented annually, one to a team in a service and one to a team at a faculty.

Objectives

  • To highlight the key role staff members play in enriching the quality of the university experience.
  • To recognize teams who:
    • Are innovative in the area of service excellence and defy the conventional by finding new ways to transform the service experience
    • Create programs, policies and services that give expression to the University’s vision of service excellence
    • Stand out because of the exceptional quality of the service they provide

Eligibility

All teams, whether they are with a faculty or service or involved in a multi-service or multi-faculty special project, are eligible for the award.

Nominations

  • Nominations must come from clients of the team or from a senior manager, in which case at least one of the reference letters below must be from a client of the team.
  • Teams cannot nominate themselves.

Nominations must include

  • A description of the team’s exceptional contribution to service excellence that helps improve the university experience (maximum of 750 words). No form is required. If the description is in excess of 750 words, only the first 750 words will be considered when evaluating nominees. The description must objectively portray the team’s accomplishments during the year or achievements that illustrate ongoing service excellence over multiple years.
  • Three letters or statements of support describing the team’s exceptional efforts (maximum 150 words).
  • Contact information for the nominators, those providing letters of support and the team members.

The team stands out among their peers and makes an exceptional contribution to fulfilling the University’s vision of service excellence by:

  • Finding solutions, 20%

Selection and awarding of prizes

Selection of recipients

The selection committee will:

  • Prepare a shortlist of up to five individual award nominees whose contribution to service excellence truly stands out.
  • Prepare a shortlist of up to three team award nominees for both faculty and service teams whose contribution to service excellence truly stands out.
  • Submit the shortlist to the president, who then makes the final decision on the winners.

Awarding of prizes and recognition of recipients

Recipients of the President’s Award for Service Excellence will receive a personal invitation to the awards ceremony to be held during the Founders’ Breakfast, on May 2, 2017. The president will present the winners with their award and briefly highlight their accomplishments.

An article on the recipients will also be featured in the Gazette and each recipient will receive a letter of congratulations from the president.
